RESEARCH ACCOMPLISHMENTS

I am a Research Leader at La Plata University and CONICET, Argentina. As entomologist, my main interest is the area of pest insect population biology and ecology using different approaches. I have also conducted investigations in community ecology, looking at the structure of different pest and parasitoid insect assemblages. Many of these research projects have been conducted in collaboration with other colleagues or Ph. D. students of my research group. At present, I am particularly interested in the study of bottom-up, top-down and tritrophic interactions with the aim to improve current pest management. PAST RESEARCH

1. Biology and ecology of grasshopper populations We studied the biology traits and demography of different species of grasshoppers from Argentina and the US grasslands, under field and laboratory conditions

2. Grassland and shrubland grasshopper community composition in La Pampa province, Argentina. Grasshopper species composition, diversity and abundance on five grasslands and shrublands in northern La Pampa province were determined.

3. Biology and ecology of soybean pest populations. We studied the mean developmental time of the different stages and population parameters of the budborer Crocidosema aporema (Lepidoptera, Tortricidae) on soybean and other legumes, and the defoliator Rachiplusia nu (Lepidoptera, Noctuidae), two of the major soybean pests in Argentina. The parasitoid assemblage structure of soybean defoliator Lepidoptera in northwestern Buenos Aires province, was studied determining parasitoid species composition, richness, number of guilds per host species, and levels of parasitism.

4. Mite predator-prey interaction We studied mite predator-prey interaction in two tomato and strawberry crops in La Plata (Buenos Aires, Argentina), to evaluate the possibility of biological control by conservation techniques. In strawberry crops Tetranychus urticae (Acari, Tetranychidae) is a major pest and Neoseiulus californicus (Acari, Phytoseiidae) is the most important established predator. It is a promising established natural enemy for controlling T. urticae on strawberry. However, in tomato, leaf hairiness negatively affected survival, fecundity, T. urticae searching efficiency and consumption’s efficiency of this predator, prevented it from exhibiting a strong numerical response. This result shows the need to consider plant attributes as an essential and interactive component of biological control practices.

5. Parasitism of Tuta absoluta (Lepidoptera, Gelechiidae) by Pseudapanteles dignus (Hymenoptera, Braconidae) under field and laboratory conditions. Laboratory studies were conducted to determine life history traits and the functional response of the parasitoid P. dignus, a major enemy of T. absoluta in tomato crops in South America. P. dignus showed a type I functional response within the range of host densities tested. We studied the pattern of parasitism of T. absoluta by the parasitoid, at three scales on tomato crops: plant, leaf and leaflet, in a horticultural region, in La Plata, Argentina. Field percentages of parasitism ranged from 17.06 to 45.95 %. Parasitoid aggregation in relation to host density was found at leaf and leaflet scales. However, the proportion of parasitized hosts was independent of host density. The variability of parasitism rates exhibited at the three spatial scales seems to result in partial refuges for the host, which might contribute to the stability of the interaction between host and parasitoid.

CURRENT AND FUTURE RESEARCH

1. Conservation biological control of Tetranychus urticae by Neoseiulus californicus : Effect of different alternative food and refuge on the performance of the predator. We are investigating the spatial and temporal availability of food and refuge that may be critical determinants of whether, when, or how the predator N. californicus survives and performs in the agroecosystem. The objective is to develop a conservation biological control plan for T. urticae using the predator N. californicus through habitat management techniques.

2. Ecological studies for the biological control of Tuta absoluta (Lepidoptera, Gelechiidae) in La Plata region (Buenos Aires, Argentina). The aim of this study is to evaluate the potential of two larval parasitoids (Hymenoptera) of natural presence in tomato crops of this region, for the biological control of Tuta absoluta, in tomato. We are determining the potential growth and the oviposition behaviour of the koinobiont Pseudapanteles dignus under laboratory and field conditions and the competence with the idiobiont Dineulophus phthorimaeae.

3. Effect of transgenic soybean crop on the community of pests and natural enemies. The purpose is to detect the effect of transgenic soybean introduction and expansion on the community of pests and natural enemies. For doing so, we are comparing previous samplings of these species in no- transgenic soybean from 80’ and 90’ decades to actual samplings on transgenic soybean of the same area, in Buenos Aires province. We are determining the specific diversity, abundance, the effect of feeding on both types of soybean on the performance of different species, and the ecotoxicological effect of glyphosate on some important predators.
